Preview: United v Sheffield United

Old Trafford Tuesday, 17 April Kick-off: 2000 BST Live on Sky (so head down the pub early)

The man who sits opposite me at work is a Sheffield United fan and until this weekend was certain they were going down. Unfortunately, the players of Sheffield United and their manager, Colin do not share his surrendering attitude as shown when they thumped West Ham 3-0 on Saturday

All the games until the end of the season are now must win following the loss to Portsmouth and it is not ideal to be playing a relegation threatened team now. Especially when our defence is down to only 1 fit first choice pair of legs.

It is reported that it will either be Fletcher in at right-back where he comfortably played against Watford, or youth captain, Craig Cathcart. The official website reports him as :-

a traditionally-styled centre-half, but he also possesses the ability and confidence to bring the ball out of defence.

I think they should go with the United tradition and play Cathcart. I’m never a fan of playing players out of position whether it is Rooney on the left or Roy Keane at centre-back. Cathcart will fight for it and play the game of his life. Fletcher may play well but make one positional mistake and let in a striker to score.

I’m being pessimistic though. United will always score (at least) one more, and either Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes, Smith, Giggs or Carrick will deliver some magic to win the game.

See how many players I named there? Like the good old days. A couple of seasons ago, you’d hope that Giggs would reclaim his old form or that Ruud would poach one.

Prediction: 3-1
