Ronaldo wins PFA award double

Christiano Ronaldo has won both PFA awards in recognition of his outstanding performances this season. The PFA award was last won by a United player in 2002 when Van Nistelrooy picked it up, while Ronaldo has stolen the Young Players award off Wayne Rooney; that night in Germany was the start of a major shift in positions between the two players.

Rooney was always the young player that actually did things on the pitch, whereas Ronaldo had all the tricks but no final product. This season Rooney hasn’t produced too often, probably as a result of being rushed back too soon for England, whereas Ronaldo has produced and raised his skill levels at the same time.

The key to Ronaldo is his ability to perform his skills at a very high pace. I’m sure he still dives sometimes and I wish he wouldn’t, but a number of times (I’m looking at Garath Southgate) he has been clipped and has gone down because he is going so fast. He is very tall for a winger, unlike Maradona and Best who had low centres of gravity and could ride tackles. If he has one weakness, it looks to be his freekick taking. Sometimes it goes in like a rocket, but often it goes anywhere but near the goal.

Three years ago I said that Ronaldo would be a world class player in a couple of years time. I’m very glad to be proved right even if he was a year late.

Chelsea miss chance against Newcastle

It could have been a one point gap, but the Chelsea players showed they were human too, getting a goalless draw away to Newcastle. I couldn’t bear to watch the game. I hate watching them play anyway.

It is still 3 (+1) points and only 4 games to go. It is too tight to predict confidently when, where and even who will win the league as both teams are playing like the boxers at the end of Rocky. Out on their feet but still punching.

Quite often United win the title when they are not even playing as their rivals lose but etch Wednesday 09th May into your diaries when their rivals could lose and United play and win the title. If no more points are lost before that game, a win or draw will give the title to United. Even a Chelsea win will mean that United will have to beat West Ham (most probably relegated) at Old Trafford. I’d rather it didn’t get to that. Okay, it was at Upton Park but there are not good omens to playing West Ham on the last game of the season.

United 1 Middlesbrough 1

A really tired performance from United and I don’t seem to write a match report up without mentioning an injury to a defender.

Apart from the first five minutes, United were lethargic and leaden, a rare day when all of United’s key players did not perform.

There were four key moments in this game. First, a great pass from Scholes to Rooney who controlled it well, rounded the keeper and would have scored if Richardson hadn’t pouched it off him (David Nugent would have been proud).

Second, a reoccurance of Rio’s groin injury meant that he was out of position when Downing put his only good cross in. Rio was static and could not get to the ball and behind him Brown failed to stop Viduka heading home the equaliser.

Third, Solskjaer was denied a perfectly good (and Besteque) goal when he robbed the Boro’ keeper as he kicked the ball. Despite not touching the keeper, raising his foot high or obstructing anyone in any way, 20Legend was booked to add insult to caution. Why do keepers get such protection?

Finally, this injustice was evened up as ‘Boro were denied was looked like a clear penalty when Dong-Gook Lee went down following a John O’Shea tackle. By then my hopes of the three points were long gone.

The key to the game was the Rio injury coming so close to half time. If it was earlier in the half, Fergie would have subbed him quickly, but he was trying to see Rio until half time. I caught a shake of the head from Rio, followed by a clenched fist from Fergie, clearly meaning “You must carry on.” This lead to the goal and cost us all three points.

Now, we must go to Chelsea and get a result as the title now lies in both teams hand.

I hope this is a temporary blip and United bounce back for their next game, AC Milan otherwise the Champions League will be a hope for next season not this.

Preview: Man Utd v Middlesbrough

Another game against ‘Boro. Hopefully they won’t deliberately try to injure Ronaldo like at the end of the last game. Fergie has praised Alan Smith ahead of the game.

“He has brought a freshness and an infectious enthusiasm which is spreading throughout the team.”

I have to agree. Smith ‘ran the line’ against Roma and was a massive factor in their destruction. Whenever he plays, he puts in 100% and he’s from Dirty Leeds, that’s professionalism. He might not have the skill of Ronaldo or Giggs or the poaching finishing of a Van Nistelrooy but he brings commitment and a very unsettling effect on the opposition.

I wonder which Boro will turn up, in particular the on-off Viduka who can win a match for any team when he wants to (another Dirty Leeds player but sort of the opposite of Smith) but quite often doesn’t really want to bother.

We need another win as the Terminator like Chelsea are still on our tail. We’ll still pull the switch and crush them out at Stanford Bridge.

Prediction for today: 2-1 (Ronaldo and Fletcher).

Ronaldo not the best yet, says Pele

Pele reckons that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the world’s best player yet.

“We have to wait a little bit. Let’s see in one or two years more if he can keep the same level.”

He probably still thinks Nicky Butt is the best.
