AC Milan 3 Manchester United 0 (5-3)
United were dumped out of the Champions League by an impressive display from AC Milan, but again it was terrible defending that undid them. At 1-0 down in the game and level at 3-3, Heinze, so impressive in the past played a dreadful ball across the defence to an unexpecting Vidic. It resulted in Vidic slipping, poorly clearing it straight to Seedoorf and a good finish made it 2-0. Whilst it is possible to beat Everton when 2-0 down, it is near impossible against AC.
That said, we showed none of the passion and commitment I asked for and was shown in the 1999 semi final against Juventus; when miraculously United did come from 2-0 down to win. That remained my hope in this game, but really it was Milan that had the Keane like hero. Gattuso was a massive player for Milan and bit and snarled his team to victory.
In fact, I think it showed last night why the 1999 treble was so special. United are now playing a big game twice a week and it showed. It is not surprise that the teams that went through to the final were able to rest their best players before the game, whilst Chelsea and United had to play them.
At least in the run in to the league, we are being chased by a team as tired as we are and the cup final is against them too. Another double is still on!
