Thankfully we’d already won the league as this game was 1995 all over again. Whilst it wasn’t 100% 1st choice line up it was a whole lot stronger than the team that played Chelsea. And all the talent came close but couldn’t break down West Ham.
In truth, it was probably because we’d won the league. United didn’t really try 100% whilst West Ham gave 110%. Rooney didn’t go in as hard as he normally does and the goal came mainly from Wes Brown not really going for the tackle when he should have. You know that if the title was at stake, he’d have taken the tackle and possibly risked a red card. Perhaps the FA Cup final was in the minds.
This isn’t the fault of Man United and Sheffield United only have themselves (and perhaps the FA for not docking West Ham points) to blame.
There was a few good chances and Green did well in goal, but in the end there was a lot of possession and not enough end product.
And so, the Red Devils celebrated another title, captain Gary Neville came out and shared lifting the trophy with Ryan Giggs. I have a t-shirt from the 90’s with Giggs on the front. On the back it reads Living Legend. It was true then and it is nine times true now. Ronaldo, Rooney et al received their first Winners Medal and I bet that felt really good. But Giggs beats absolutely everyone now.
