Review: Manchester United 0 Reading 0

Not the best start to a league campaign but Rooney’s broken foot aside, not too much to worry about. United failed to breakdown a very defensive Reading team, who took the attitude that United were simply going to be too hot to handle and decided to man-mark all the three forwards. They played with just one up front and had an extra man at the back.

It was slightly worrying that United failed to break them down, but not all teams will be as good defensively as Reading were, Ronaldo and Scholes were somewhat subdued (was Scholes fully fit?), Rooney limped off at half time, and we have Anderson, Hargreaves, Saha, Solskjaer and Tevez to come into the team. We were obviously limited by the extended transfer of Tevez delaying arrival whilst Rossi and Smith but left. Seeing goalkeeping legend John O’Shea upfront showed how limited we are there at the moment. Get Tevez matchfit and we will come good.

The few (in relation to the possession we had) chances we had were not well taken, and the Reading goalkeeper had it relatively straightforward to save.

Whilst Reading have said that their Premiership survival won’t be based on results at Old Trafford, United’s results against Reading won’t mean they won’t win the league. Reading drew away to Chelsea last season and will take points off the big teams again this season.

Obviously Rooney’s foot break is a major blow as he might be out for two months and won’t be the same player straightaway. Step forward Tevez please.
