Rumours of the end of the world greatly exaggerated

>>>>>>> .r8797I’m beginning to think the signings of Anderson and Nani were bad ideas. Not in terms of the team and the future of Manchester United, but it seems to have sent the United fans into overdrive and any poor result (with a corresponding good result from Chelsea) will send the fans into a nose dive of despair. From the reactions, I’d have guess your were all Spurs fans, not United fans[1].
I remember a thumping 5-0 defeat by Newcastle followed up by a humbling 6-3 loss to Southampton the next game, yet we still won the league that year. I remember a year when Liverpool, masters of the league in the 70’s and 80’s were 4th from bottom after about 8 games into a season. How everyone laughed. And the Liverpool fans were the ones laughing at the end of the season when they won it.
So, we haven’t got off to a great start. However, we should remember that comparing the results against last season we are only 1 point worse off, as we lost away to Portsmouth.
An important point to note is that the teams beneath the top 4 have improved. I think it is possible that whilst none of the likes of Newcastle, Blackburn, Everton, Tottenham or even Manchester City will actually get into the top 4 this season, they will take more points off the top teams. It was hard for Chelsea to get any better, but the teams below them have and they are more likely to draw or even beat them, purely because they are a better team. Chelsea were lucky to beat Reading last night in one respect as Reading should have been 3-0 up at half time if they have taken the 4 or 5 good chances they had.
My concerns with the United side remain the same. Without Rooney, the fit forward lineup we have is so thin David Beckham might think he is married to it. It is Tevez and erm, well that’s it. And he’s not properly fit himself. Without Ronaldo as well for 3 games, we need Tevez to immediately pay back on the hassle that was created signing him. Heaven help us, if he gets an knock.
[1] Aside about Spurs, they seem to have fallen into the fatal trap of strengthening the strongest part of their squad.

I would like to thank you and the members of this blog for helping me to see things with some perspective. I know it seems as though I came off half-cocked with my plea of “help me see some hope somewhere” but I never figured that we were not in much of a better place at the beginning of last season. You all have helped me immensely. Bring on City, sans Rooney and Ronny…we can STILL do this!
