Manchester City v Manchester United (Council House, Sunday 19th August 13:30BST, Live on Sky)
I always seem to remember the Manchester derby being near my birthday, but maybe it was just one year and I’ve put false memories to all the other years. Anyway, we’re returning to the Council House just 5 games after the last visit when we effectively won the title.
That was a season ago, and for City fans probably feels like a lifetime ago. The night-watchman has been bowled out, a dodgy new owner has come in and brought Sven with him. Two wins has got the blue half of Manchester as optimistic as two draws have got the Reds pessimistic.
City have a host of new players, including some Brazilians, but the player United fans will be looking out for is young Kasper Schmeichel, a younger mirror of his father in both appearance and style of play. No offence to the young boy, but I hope he has a nightmare.
United don’t look to have any good news on the injury front. In addition to Ronaldo’s suspension and Rooney’s foot, Hargreaves is still having trouble with tendonitis. Anderson has a hamstring strain and Solskjaer’s knee is still knacked. Better news is that Saha and Neville are back in training. I expect the forwards to be Giggs, Tevez and Nani, with O’Shea playing in midfield with Carrick and Scholes, but Fergie might go for pushing Evra forward again.
It’s about time the season really started, and no better time than in the derby. My oddly optimistic prediction is 3-0 (Tevez 2, O’Shea).
