In defence of the 1-0 win
Last season, after a thrilling semi-final first leg against AC Milan which we won 3-2 (eventually in vain) I stated
however many we concede all we have to do is score one more.
Little did I realise what I had said. Perhaps what I should have said was score one or more than one more. When the defence doesn’t concede a single goal, one more is just one!
If you ignore the Carling Cup game when the defence was made up of reserves, United have played 10 league and Champions League games and conceded just 2 goals (for the record one against Manchester City and one against Portsmouth)
0.2 goals per game. Putting aside everything else that is a phenomenal record. If applied to a whole Premier League campaign that would be 8 goals (well 7.6 goals but you can’t actually score .6 of a goal).
I think we’ve always had a top class defence but if you are 3-0 up, you don’t care if it becomes 3-1, and we’d tend to bomb further forward and make it 4-1. When you are 1-0 up, you are less likely to attack in the final ten minutes.
