Review: Manchester United 4 Derby County 1

Manchester United 4 (Giggs 40, Tevez 45, 60, Ronaldo 90 pen) Derby County 1 (Howard 76)

Sorry for the delay in the review. I got food poisoning Saturday night which spoiled what would have been a very good weekend. Footballing wise, not only did United win, but both Arsenal and Liverpool lost, leaving United just 1 point behind the Gunners with the game in hand wiped out.

Ryan Giggs scored his 100th League goal for United to open the scoring. What an achievement for a great player. I’ve got a T-shirt from way back in 94 or something that bears the caption “Living Legend”. 13 years on and still a living legend. In years to come, the latest left winger will surely be touted as the next Ryan Giggs, not the next George Best.

The goal was a simple tap-in if anything is simple in the driving rain that poured down on Old Trafford. The Derby keeper, Bywater, could only parry Christiano Ronaldo’s fierce drive and it fell to the well placed Giggs on the 6 yard box. Giggs side footed it home to end Derby’s stubborn opposition.

Soon after it was 2-0 with Carlos Tevez first making a complete mess of a shot, before showing great balance to keep his feet after said airshot and putting the ball in the net. In truth, the miss completely dummied the keeper and made the 2nd chance easy.

Tevez made it 3 in the 2nd half with a powerful cross goal shot finding the corner, before Fergie rang the changes and Derby got their first away goal of the season. If I was being critical, I’d be wondering why Van der Saar came racing off his line, but in truth it hardly mattered and never would have changed the result.

Nor would the last minute penalty Ronaldo won and scored himself. All the sympathy he won for his unjust booking probably vanished as he trailed his leg to go down for a penalty far too easily. How come the only penalties we do get are last minute ones which don’t change the result anyway?

Ronaldo also managed to upset the United faithful by not letting Tevez take the penalty and have a chance at completing his first hat trick for United. Ronaldo needs to learn a little bit about karma and then maybe he’ll get his hat trick as well.

  1. 1 Diddy

Perhaps Ronaldo thought it not fair for Tevez to get a hat trick before Rooney. Ho Ho Ho!
PS – pleased you are better.
