Manchester United 2 Portsmouth 0

Manchester United 2 (Ronaldo 9,11) Portsmouth 0

A walk in the park for United as Ronaldo’s two early goals saw United get an easy win at home to go back to the top of the league.

It was quite an odd team selection for United as Rooney and Ronaldo were up front and Scholes returned to partner Carrick in midfield and Nani and Park were the wide boys.  But any fears that too many wide boys would spoil the performance were gone in just nine minutes as Nani played in Ronaldo who side footed the ball past David James.  It was the culmination of total dominance from United from the kick off, and Portsmouth were swept aside by the powerful start.

David James was making his 500th Premiership start but probably wished that he’d not bothered getting up this morning after Ronaldo’s second goal.  I think the word to describe the freekick is astonishing.   When Beckham took a freekic, you sort of knew where it was going (even if you couldn’t get to it) and how he did it, but I really can’t work out how he gets the ball to move like it does.  I’ve kicked the odd free kick in my time (my technique could best be described as a slow motion Beckham curler that always went over the bar) but I couldn’t even attempt it.  Find a video of this free kick as soon as you can, just to see it as I can’t really describe it.  He gets on his tiptoes then sidefoots through the ball, across the ball and then into the net.  The movement of the ball is also very weird; left, right straight.  James had no chance as it passed a millimetre inside both the bar and post.

I might as well describe the free kick for another three paragraphs because the rest of the game was a let down.  Portsmouth never got close to the goal (Vidic back and on top form); I don’t think Van der Sar had a save to make.  United missed chance after chance.  I felt sorry for Rooney in the end, because he is being outclassed by Ronaldo, and he’s having trouble scoring.  However, say what you like about young Wayne, he keeps trying and he looks like he is happier.  Smiling with Campbell after out muscling him but the mis hitting the lob over James so that he didn’t reach the goalline.

The only downside to today was the performance of Park.  He just didn’t reach the standards of the other United players.  He got into good positions but constantly messed up once he had the ball in those positions.  It was good to see Paul Scholes back on the pitch.  His passing was superb, and there was one full blooded tackle that he actually timed right.  Scholes and Carrick were back together; making their Championship winning partnership again.  But I feel their time is numbered.  Scholes just because of age, but Carrick isn’t close to Anderson in drive, tackling and passing already, and Hargreaves is the proper defensive midfield partner to Anderson.

In the end 2-0 was flattering on Portsmouth and United stepped off the gas because it was too easy.  My only concern would have been a similar situation against a better team and that team getting back into it.  Of course, we have a great defence as well, and that wasn’t tested at all tonight.  Find the highlights of this game, but stop at half time.

The Old Trafford crowd were loud and fully part of the game too.  Was there some Fergie mind games going on with the supporters as well as players and managers  ;)

MEN Munich Special

Biffafootie reports that there is a commemorative newspaper out :-

The newsagents in Manchester are selling a 48 page supplement “Munich Remembered”. It costs a quid, and is published by the Manchester Evening News

As he says, there is a history of these things. Somewhere in my loft (or perhaps my dad’s loft) I have some old newspaper specials from the Manchester Evening News and learnt a lot of the history of Manchester United from them.

You can buy a copy online from ManchesterOnline for a quite bargain price of £3 (or £6.10 if you live abroad).

Manchester United 3 Tottenham 1

Manchester United 3 (Tevez 38, Ronaldo 69p, 88) Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Keane 24)

Ronaldo celebratesUnited progressed to the 5th round of the FA Cup after an entertaining tie was decided when Tottenham’s Dawson was sent off for handball and Ronaldo scored from the resulting penalty.

This was a very open and even game, especially in the first half. Tottenham took the lead after a great pass put Aaron Lennon in down the right wing. He put in an excellent ball which beat Brown and Van der Sar and Keane was in there to apply a simple tap in. You never got the sense that United would fall down in the same way Arsenal did midweek and they were soon level.

A long ball caused more confusion than it should have in the Spurs defence and they let in Tevez who applied an excellent finish across the keeper for the equalizer. An end to end first half ended even and you could have seen this going either way, but in the second United started to dominate. Hargreaves was on much better form than last week against Reading and really put himself about breaking up Tottenham attacks before they had started.

Then Van der Sar took a long, long freekick deep into the heart of the Spurs penalty area. Suddenly Rooney was one on one with Dawson and looked to be taking aim to shoot, only for the ball to change course and go off the pitch. Rooney immediately claimed for a handball and the ref was quickly on the scene to award a penalty for the handball and send off Dawson. Replays showed a clear deliberate hand ball which I missed, so well done to the ref for spotting it in real time.

If Ronaldo had any worries after missing against West Ham, he didn’t show it, and stuck the ball away for 2-1. It was mostly game over from this point. Spurs huffed and puffed and nearly scored an equaliser when a cross for Berbatov was intercepted by Brown (from off his toes) and the ball hit the post.

A huge cheer went out when Paul Scholes came off the bench, in fact the only person who looked annoyed was the replaced Carrick who probably wanted to score against his old team. Ronaldo finished the game off late when his shot took a slight deflection and then went under Cerny, a shot he should have saved. Come back Robinson?

United progressed to the next round and looked very much on form.  We’ll have to be because whilst I was writing this we’ve drawn Arsenal at home in the 5th round.  Let’s take down the Gunners.

Preview of Man United v Tottenham in the FA Cup 4th Round

Tottenham are the 9th Premiership side in a row United have faced in the FA Cup.  This must be some sort of record.  Tottenham come off the back of a great 5-1 win over Arsenal in the Carling Cup.  Despite it being a mostly youth side, Arsenal played Gallas and Fabregas for most of the game.  Just as damaging was the on field fight between Bendtner and Adebayor.  We’ll see if this defeat carries into league performances in the next few weeks.  So thanks Spurs, but don’t expect United to roll over in the same way.

Judging by the team we put out against Villa, we’re taking this seriously and whilst Ronaldo or Rooney may be rested, probably not both.  I think Park needs to be given another game to try to make up for his poor performance against Reading.  We might even see the sight of Paul Scholes on the bench.  Anderson might also play after missing the Reading game, but I think it more likely that Hargreaves will continue as he needs more games after his silly little injuries.

Spurs’ manager Juande Ramos is a bit of a cup specialist not only for the Carling Cup with Spurs but at his old club Sevilla, but then Fergie is the FA Cup king .  Expect a very goo, entertaining game but as it is at Old Trafford, I see a comfortable win in the end.

Will Fergie retire if United win the Champions League

The story goes that Sir Alex Ferguson will retire as Manchester United manager just as soon as United win the Champions League.  The other story goes that Fergie is so convinced that his current crop of youngster will be the best ever that he’ll not retire for many years yet whether or not the Champions League Cup comes back to Old Trafford.

Yes - Fergie will retire

His one major regret as Manchester United manager is that United never followed up their 1999 Champions League win with another win.  He is only carrying on as manager so he can prove to all doubters that he is the best manager ever by winning the trophy twice and bettering Sir Matt Busby and proving that 99 wasn’t just a one season fluke.

No - Fergie won’t retire

Winning the Champions League isn’t the only motivation for Fergie.  He has proved that he has the ability to build and rebuild great teams - 93-94, 99 and 07-?  He is so excited by the current side he has gone on record saying that this team has the ability to be his best ever.  He wouldn’t abandon the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney at the end of this season when they have many years ahead at the top of their game.
